my thoughts on Yummy Yummy (ep 1 - 8)
I actually squeezed out some time the past week to watch like 2 to 3 episodes of Yummy Yummy per week (the disc are not completely in cos it's currently showing in HK). Decided not to wait until Mediacorp finally announces the airing of this series (rumours has it that it will be shown end-Sept on Ch U) cos I'm sure I'll be even more busy than I am now and also cos I wanna watch it in the original soundtrack (NO MANDARIN DUBBINGS!!!)
Am up to episode 8 right now and I must say that I enjoyed it! particularly, I like the distinct characterizations of each character, since at only 8 episodes I wouldn't actually expect the story to go anywhere yet. So will talk about the characters for now:
We're such a sweet and loving bunch that we're turning diabetic!
Charmaine Sheh (Mandy):
I concede that my least favourite for now is Mandy... Her personality and her story seem to be the most boring of the 5 leads at this point of time where all we know of her is that she is head strong and has a long-time boyfriend whom she loves dearly, thou since the role of the boyfriend is played by resident jerkactor whose name I actually can't remember(!), she's definitely gonna suffer some big blow sooner or later, allowing either Raymond Lam or Kevin Cheng to come into the picture. Acting-wise, I'm not in a good position to comment cos I haven't been following her series often but I just feel that she hasn't improved much since that disappointing Point of No Return... Of course, too early to tell...
Tavia Yeung (Lemon):
I like this character, cos she reminds me so much of myself. In what ways? Nah, since it applies to me I'm embarrassed to list them out here la... But I must say Tavia definitely is one of the best actresses from TVB in recent years, the other being Myolie Wu (and maybe Bernice Liew thou I would say that she isn't one yet but definitely has that potential to).
Raymond Lam (Goose Master):
The most interesting character in the serial that I feel reflects the younger generation of Singaporeans - His Goose Master is the spoilt rich kid who is so full of himself and does things without regard for his family's concerns, yet he still manages to be quite charming and funny and very likable. I liked how he sweet-talks his doting father, how he interacts with his buddies and how he assumes the role of 'life mentor' to Michelle Chia's character even when everyone else knows that he's just as bad as she when it comes to losing millions doing businesses which were set up in the spur of the moment and having no real aim in life. And of course, Raymond portrays this character very well, being one of the best actors of his generation in TVB.
Kevin Cheng (Chicken):
Ahhh... my favourite actor of the moment. Well, I have to admit that Chicken is a pretty 2-dimensional character now at episode 8, optimistic, friendly, helpful, caring, understanding and just plain NICE NICE NICE. Sounds boring on paper but I actually enjoyed watching him on screen! Apart from the obvious element of bias, I thought I like the chemistry Chicken had with the other leads and even with his family (a very cute bunch, reminds me of Peg's family in Not Just a Pretty Face). Heard that his character gets more 3D later on thou. Acting-wise, I feel that Kevin has been improving with each serial he acts in, especially in terms of really letting go which I thought worked in this serial. But of course, I haven't seen any scenes where real emotional output is required so can't say much about that either.
One complaint thou, Kevin Cheng is really really thin here!!! What happened??? As thin as when he was in Split Seconds, where he was supposed to play a terminally ill cop hence thinness justified but definitely not in here. Miss seeing the fuller-faced Kevin.
Ben Yeo (Terry):
Finally, an honourable mention goes to Singaporean Ben Yeo, who frankly isn't a very good actor but for a first-time actor in a huge role among more experienced HK actors and actresses, I find him adequate and even amusing to watch. Of course, his character is an interesting one in the first place. His Terry is the naive, timid Singaporean who is used to being controlled by his mum played by Singaporean veteran actress Chen Hui Hui and who finds himself in amusing situations whether trying to avoid his mother's diapproval taking part in the contest or staying in HK to look for his girlfriend, incurring the warth of Chicken's parents when he bunks in with the family.
Although come to think of it, will Singaporeans, being the excellent complain kings and queens we are, think that Terry is a bad representation of Singaporeans? Haha...

Official TVB website
Yup, will talk about the supporting cast, including many actors and actresses from Mediaworks another day. Will stop here for now, tired... Anyhow, I would recommend this serial for those looking for some lighthearted drama (though some of the overly-motivational scenes caused me to vomit blood but fortunately that didn't occur very often...^^). So do catch it when it finally shows on Ch U when u have the chance!

Ep 1 to 8? Ermm Pearl, ermm well you know where is ermmm.. ahhh never mind!
Where is...errrmm.. you-know-who, issit??
Haha ok ok, like what Kidd said (it was Kidd, right..?), Shaun got quite a bit of screen time from episode 1 to 6, where the competition ends (he doesn't appear ffrom 7 to 8). His character, Class Captain, was very irritaing, being the 2 dimensional scheming and cunning guy who really is smart and capable but bosses people around like he's the king and everyone should listen. In addition, he is boastful, competitive, and ... ahhh... the list goes on... It actually came to a point where I didn't like seeing him on-screen!!! When they were showing the competition I was like "Lose! Lose! Lose!" Yup, I think he has kinda mastered that evil smirk everytime he wins a round...
Hmmm... ok, acting-wise... I dunno, as u said before, there is a fine line between acting cool and being just plain exprtessionless... I couldn't tell which Shaun belonged to. Sadly, I feel he hasn't had much improvement since Yi Xin Ren... But of course, obviously not a good character to work with anyway cos like I said, very 2D (make that 1D), there's just nothing good about Class Captain. Miss his role in Yi Xin Ren. Wonder when he will get a chance to play a role like Liang Chengzhi again...
