interviews...interviews...
Had my first formal interview today. It was for the position of social worker/counsellor at the Singapore Children's Society (Family Service Centre), one of the few FSC that would consider Psychology grads for this position. Anyway, totally blew any chances cos I was dumbstruck with questions like "what's my life goal?". The freezing room didn't help very much either. I was shivering and my teeth were chattering throughout. Probably a combination of nervousness and the coldness.
Anyway, as what a friend said, I'm taking each interview as a chance to gain more experience in the technique of being interviewed. More interviews = more questions gathered = more time to think through answers = ability to answer more appropriately and more smoothly when they are repeated in future interviews (hopefully)
Rather unfair, if u think of it, cos interviews are just like those talent contests in which if u have stage fright, no matter how much talent or how much capability u have, u're doomed. Ok, hard reality of life, I know. Seriously, I'm convincing myself so much about how the real world is hard and unfair and full of dirt and grim that I'm afraid that one day I'll lose all hope in life and become nothing but this empty shell with nothing to look forward to. Possible, right?
Anyway, back to the subject. I'm being called up for another interview at Republic Poly for a position which I tried for the sake of trying but never expected that they'd actually get back to me cos my credentials don't reflect their requirements. It's actually this academic position at the Centre for Culture and Communication where I'm supposed to integrate the Arts into the diploma course and "imbue our students with confidence to engage in meaningful discussions and make presentations on a wide variety of professional and social issues."
Problem is, I was never trained in the liberal arts.
Oh my God.... What did I get myself into...?
It's a dilemma. Should I confirm and just try? Or should I say 'no' cos I'll just make a fool out of myself?

Should you? If salary is not a motivation, and if they think you're good enough, why not? Sometimes people get into careers that they never really took a ssubjects in school. But if you're not keen, don't. It will only ruin your enthusiasm.
Interview fright? Stage fright? Wait a minute, I thought you acted in plays and took jazz dancing classes? Or is being interviewed a totally different thing? Yes, even performers stutter when they are bombarded with questions from reporters and fans. Hmmm...
Actually the place I work at requires that you have an interview with your immediate supervisor to see how you are performing every year. And one of the most hated questions they ask every single time is "What are your goals for the next five years." Now how you answer this question is very tricky. If you say that you see yourself doing the same job but with intention of widening your knowledge in the same area, then they will consider you as an employee who does not strive to improve and may not give you a good raise. If you say that you are bored with your job and hope to move on, then you might be given a position that you do not like which is what happened with one co-worker. He ended going back to his old job but people now look at him as if he failed to keep his other position but in reality he had no intention of taking the new position but his supervisor only misunderstood him at the interview. Geez, how bad can this be. Will you be given an interview every year also?
