~ Gabriel Garcia Marquez

pain in the arse, except for movies...

Job searching is a real pain in the arse. I've gotten interviews for temp jobs by recruitment agencies, but none for perm jobs. Starting to wonder if I've been looking in the wrong places? Lots of concerns also, like what if a dream job comes up and I'm tied down to my temp one? Lots of stuff to think about... lots of stuff. Been running around for interviews and sending out resumes and frankly, I'm actually getting a little tired. Feel like leaving the job searching aside after Sat and just wait and see for the next week. After all, it's new year and I think employees themselves are in a holiday mood anyway...

Anyway, I must say that I've watched quite a number of good movies within this month, including...

In the cinema...

1) King Kong - great work from Peter Jackson!

2) Joyeux Noel - like I said, I wish everyone would watch it. Unfortuhnately when my friend and I watched it in the cinema on an evening, there were less than 10 patrons inside.

3) History of Violence - won't be one of my favourites but an interesting movie which is worth watching.

From rentals...

1) Beyond the Sea - a very unconventional and creative project from first-time director Kevin Spacey. Wonderful singing and dancing, and of course, acting, from the Spacey.

2) Love Actually - beautiful, wonderful, charming, enchanting British comedy with a superb cast! 'nuff said!

3) The Mechinist - engaging psychological thriller/drama starring an emaciated Christian Bale. When everything is revealed at the end where u go "ohhhh", u actually feel a deep sense of sadness for the character.

4) The Sea Inside (Spanish) - a touching masterpiece about a quadriplegic, who had been bedridden for 25 years, lobbying for the legalization of euthansia so that he could end his own life. Based on a true story. The beauty of this movie is that it does not support nor condemn mercy killing. All you get is a man's life journey, into his past, and his present, his thoughts and feelings and the people around him. Very very touching. I cried buckets towards the end and after the movie.

Purchase (out of pure curiosity after watching the trailer)...

5) Gods and Monsters - a movie starring Sir Ian McKellen and Brandon Fraser which explores the life of the last days of James Whale, best known as the director of the original "Frankenstien" and "Bride of Frankenstien". It's based on a novel, hence it's actually part fact, part fiction. There are gay themes, as the real Whale himself has been rumoured to be homosexual. However, try not to watch this movie with the obssession of picking out the homosexual aspects and what u'll get is a very good movie that portrays the life of a lonely, yet artistic and brillant man who is dying of a degenerative neurological disease that threatens to take away everything that once defined him as a person, thrusting him into his painful past with bouts of hallucinations and nostalgia. Brandon Fraser does well in this dramatic role as the man whose company Whale finds comfort in (try to forget him as George of the Jungle) and Sir Mckellen as Whale is as usual superb.

Movies - one of those passions that keeps me going... haha.. Anyway, these are good movies and I'd highly recommend them, though I must admit that not every one suits everyone's tastes. Why, my brother actually didn't like King Kong! Said it was lame with too many plot holes and poor CGI and that he was glad when the show was finally over. So, I guess beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.

Ok, gotta go sleep. Been unable to sleep early these few days for being hooked onto JobsDB.com and sending out more resumes...

Pearl, never ever settle for any job unless you're so financially desparate that it is like do or die or you're gonna be kicked out of your house type of situation. Find the job you enjoy. I am not sure what job you're looking for but since you like writing plays, perhaps in the printing industry or entertainment industry? Since you like doing social work, join social work groups unless again you really is hard of cash. Get a job that is not a job but a career. Believe me, temp or no temp, once you settle down and get tied down, there's no escape. You're still young enough to venture out and look, don't settle. DON'T EVER SETTLE!

My wish for you in the new year is not just finding a job, but having a career that you will grow to love and reap theruits of your hard labour AND yes yes yes, get yourself a good SUCCESSFUL FINANCIALLY STABLE EMOTIONALLY STABLE & PSYCHOLOGICALLY SOUND man and of course, get to your ideal body weight.

HAPPY NEW YEAR MY FRIEND!
