ups and downs
The past few days was a roller coaster of emotions...
Firstly, I have spent my last days at my previous organization last week, with sad farewells with my students ( a sweet bunch who kept telling me how they will miss me and how I've made a difference to them... *sob*) and my colleagues. The last week at work also saw the arrival of a new staff, who was a bubbly and chatty and was quite a joy to work with. There was also the excitement of a new job and new prospects, but with it comes with lots of uncertainties and worries. Good thing is though, I'm taking a one week break before embarking on my new daunting task...
Secondly, yesterday was the first time we had our rehearsals on stage and according to the cast, it was one experience they had some difficulty getting used too. All of a sudden, in addition to the usual need for the right facial and body movements, they needed to be mindful of various things such as voice projection and getting used to the huge space on stage. And yet again, I'm still having a headache as to who to cast for one character as the original actress has gone MIA and the potential replacement may have problems committing her time and... IT'S ONE MORE MONTH TO GO ONLY!!!!!
My thyroid problem is under control with the medication, and after searching on the Internet I now know that it's called "Hyperthyroidism" and it's a condition caused by hereditary or stress. Since no one in my bloodline has got this condition, most people were almost certain mine was caused by stress.
Hyperthyroidism is also known as Graves Disease though according to some websites, Graves Disease is probably one from of hyperthyrioidism. Thankfully, I don't have that...
According to About.com, "Graves' Disease is a type of autoimmune disease in which the immune system over stimulates the thyroid gland, causing hyperthyroidism. Over-activity of the thyroid gland is also sometimes called "diffuse toxic goiter." The thyroid gland helps set the rate of metabolism (the rate at which the body uses energy), and when it is over-stimulated, it produces more thyroid hormones than the body needs. High levels of thyroid hormones can cause difficult side effects. This is an extremely rare disease that tends to affect women over the age of 20. The incidence is about 5 in 10,000 people."
"The most common symptoms of Grave’s Disease, or thyroid over-stimulation include insomnia, irritability, weight loss without dieting, heat sensitivity, increased perspiration, fine or brittle hair, muscular weakness, eye changes, lighter menstrual flow, rapid heart beat, and hand tremors. Grave’s Disease is the only kind of hyperthyroidism that is associated with inflammation of the eyes, swelling of the tissue around the eyes, and protrusion, or bulging, of the eyes. Some patients will develop lumpy reddish thickening of the skin in front of the shins called pretibial myxedema. This skin condition is usually painless. The symptoms of this disease can occur gradually or very suddenly and are sometimes confused with other medical problems. Women can have Grave’s Disease and have no obvious symptoms at all."
Why oh why didn't I get the weight loss symptom??? And now my medication is causing me to gain even more weight!!!
But the saddest thing about this thyroid problem is that it can be long-term and, according to this website, it's a risk if I ever decide to have a child "If you have a history or symptoms of thyroid disease and are thinking of becoming pregnant or are pregnant already, talk to your doctor."
Sigh... sigh... and more sighs....

It is never good to lose weight through illness. I hope you get well soon. Try to de-stress yourself. Maybe take a short holiday.
I had an anxiety attack once and lost more than 12 lbs in less than a week. Believe me, it's not as nice as you think. I did get a lot of compliments from my co-workers though. Along with losing weight, I notice a lot of my hair was falling off each time I washed it. It freaked me out once. A couple of dental checkups also showed that I had receding gum lines which I truly believe is related to this.
My recommendation? Don't take things too seriously. Don't be too harsh on yourself. Accept the fact that things cannot be perfect. Learn to let go.
Take care of yourself, Pearl. Things will be okay. :)
