~ Gabriel Garcia Marquez

so who's the talent?

Connie Talbot, the endearing 6-year old on Britain's Got Talent, came in 2nd, behind Paul Potts the tenor. The clip below shows her performance in the finals:

Bianca Ryan, the 11 year-old at America's Got Talent, was the eventual winner in the competition. The clip here is what she did in her finals:

Both are prodigies, in the every definition of the word - young girls with vocals so superb others can only gaze (or rather, listen) with great envy. Everytime these girls sing you just wonder - how can a little girl sing like that?

But if you ask me, the true winner for me definitely has to be the irrepressible Connie Talbot.

Bianca has power vocals that we once thought only adults were capable of producing. Yet to me, simply because these power vocals came from an 11-year old, they just turn up very strange whenever she sings. Her voice wows me, but yet at the same time the mere fact that that came from a young girl really makes it odd. And it certainly doesn't help that she chooses very adult songs about to sing which no doubt allows her to flaunt her skills but by that loses her identity as a young girl. In fact, in the semi-final and final performance, I couldn't help but felt that she may have tried too hard with those explosive vocals, losing the soul of the song in the process.

However, in comparison, Connie does not try to be someone she isn't. She is 6 years old and she acts and sings like one. Her rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow is pure and sweet, while her rendition of Ben was simple and innocent, yet in each instant she is always pitch-perfect. In fact, as much as I don't want to admit, I actually had tears welling up in my eyes with each of her performances I saw. It's simply that angelic quality to Connie that makes her stand out from the competition and be so well-loved by the audiences and the judges. Connie may not have the skills and the power vocals that Bianca possesses, but what Connie has is a very sincere and angelic presence. Bianca, however, lacks a certain character to her as she seems to have allowed her singing skills override her age and what being 11 should mean to people.

So, who's the real talent? Talent is a very subjective thing. Technique-wise, Bianca takes the cake. But Connie's unassuming and innocent self and angelic vocals has completely won me over.

Let's just hope that neither grows up to be Lindsy Lohan or Britney Spears... >.<
