In my excitement about finding Xiaobai, I forgot to say a BIG THANK YOU to all who have showed concern about the lost of Xiaobai and who have offered to help me look out for him when they pass by Bishan. Thank you so much, especially YC and paw!

Today's lecture in Evolutionary Psychology talked about altruism and kin selection. Darwin initially introduced this evolutionary idea that the act of altruism happens when it benefits oneself and one's offspring, which extends to relatives as well because they carry your genes. All this boils down to the need for reproductive success, as evoluntionary success is determined by the number of offsprings one eventually has which in turn ensures the successful continuation of ones genes.

But in this case, I am not genetically related to these wonderful individuals, yet in times of trouble, they are ever so willing to lend a helping hand, or simply offer a shoulder to lean on for support and encouragement. Can that be explained in evolutionary terms? Even for altruistic acts towards animals, can that be explained in evolutionary terms as well?

Interesting point to ponder on, isn't it? I admit I haven't read the related chapters regarding this issue cos I haven't even gotten the chance to purchase the textbook (the co-op keeps telling me that the book isn't in yet... >.<). Still, I suspect that this is an issue that, like many other wonders of the human behaviour, will never be fully resolved.
