Accroding to famous develpmental psychologist, Eric Erickson, adolescents resolve the need for identity, after which they began to experience the need for intimacy in young adulthood. Hence, dating and romance in young adulthood is a normative part of development which furthers one's identity development and also leads to intimacy development, which prepares a person for close relationships, including marriage.
Connolly et al. (2004) also proposed a sequence of stages for a typical person in early adolescence (grades 5 - 8)
1) Same-gender affiliative activities (ie. do things with the same gender peers tahat promote affiliation)
2) Mixed-gender affiliative activities (ie. hang around with boys and girls)
3) Dating activities (ie. go on dates with a boy in a group)
4) Dyadic romantic relationship
Although this was reflective of caucasian adolescents, Asian-Canadians also showed the same sequence, just that they were slower to start.
What can I say? Guess I have to admit this -
I'm definitely not normal.
So what is a freak like me doing studying about dating and romance?

Pearl you study this so that next time you will a million page thesis on something what everybody already knows! Aiyahhh that also I can say what! How does he reconcile that with homosexuality?
Pearl you and I have both missed that development stage already. I am sure when you were YOUNGER you must have some crush on some guy, got loads of female friends, maybe went on a date without realising it?
It's 2005. Being single and alone is more normal than being married with kids in a young age. Now THAT's ABNORMAL.
