TVB Anniversary Awards show

I haven't been following the awards for years now. In fact, for the last few years I only hear about the awards show like one day AFTER the awards have been given out. This time was no exception but I actually got a shocker when I turned on the computer this morning and saw this list posted on Point2e. Were the winners decided through audience voting or a panel of judges? How did the few people below get their awards? :

Best Actress Award: Charmaine Sheh ("Maiden's Vow")

Best Actor Award: Kevin Cheng ("Under the Canopy of Love")

Best Supporting Actress: Shirley Yeung Si Kei ("Always on Standby")

Best Supporting Actor: Kenny Wong Tak Bun ("Dance of Passion")

Most Improved Male Actor: Kenneth Ma Kwok Ming ("The Herbalist's Manual")

Most Improved Female Actress: Linda Chung Ka Yan ("Always on Standby")

Of course, the first person I'm gonna talk about is highlighted in bold. Kevin Cheng won best actor for his role in Under the Canopy of Love!!! The same series which I am currently watching and loving to bits and which I have just reviewed a few days ago! It was exciting, no doubt... but, as what I wrote in Funn's website, I feel that this award could have gone to other more deserving people cos this is just not his time yet. Sure, he did a good job with UTCL, but so far his characters are so similar that really, we wouldn't know how much he is capable of in his acting. In a nutshell, I'd probably be happier if he had won the award not for UTCL but for a heavy-weight serial with more serious plots and characters where he, if it's of any possibility, could show more depth in his acting.

In fact come to think of it, it is indeed weird that he won anyway cos looking at the line up of serials to be shown/filmed in 2007, he hasn't gotten any meaty roles at all. Did TVB rig the results?

Next is Charmaine Sheh... Frankly, I have nothing against her winning the award apart from the fact that Myolie Wu was more deserving of it. Guess I just want to talk about Charmaine the actress. I first saw her in Detective Investigation Files IV where she presented to me as someone vulnerable but unfortunately incredibly whiny and deadpan. She has improved by leaps and bounds, and I admit she is watchable now. Still nowhere near the league of Maggie Siu or Sheren Teng, but still watchable. But I guess I just couldn't swallow the fact how TVB has been so biased towards her, giving her all the best roles over the years despite her painful inadequecy as an actress - roles which could have been better portrayed by established actresses. With opportunities like these, where got no improvement one??

So in a sense, I guess this award for Charmaine is indeed overdue... With TVB promoting her so aggressively over the years, how come only give her the award now??

As for Shirley Yeung's win? With all your nonsense, TVB, I'm shocked yet not so shocked after all...

Sometimes it's embarrassing to hear winners say in their acceptance speech how winning said award proves their critics wrong... Erm... maybe save that till you've gotten an award at the Golden Horse Awards or HK Film Awards or maybe even the Oscars ba...

Nevertheless, winning something is always an emotional thing, particularly if it was received after years of toiling. I mean, no matter how much TVB promotes you, it's still up to you to spend that donkey hours to make use of all those opportunities, even if it means sleepless nights and poor working conditions. Kevin chocked when he thanked his mother who single-handed raised him and supported him through numerous setbacks in his 13-year showbiz career, Charmaine cried because, I believe, she felt that she had finally not disappointed the people who believed in her. Anyway, here's the clip of the duo's acceptance speeches...

Small-time gossip: Niki Chow was seen tearing when Kevin won O_o!!

Agree with your comments. Anyway just saw the acceptance speech by Charmaine, no one translated the first things she said, whilst crying like there's no tomorrow where she said "I thought I would not have a chance winning this when I won Most Favourite Character" and she was like sob sob sob. I cringed.

Probably shows how badly she wanted to get the award :P

Yah, I kinda cringed a little when she sobbed... But it wasn't as bad as the time Gigi Lai won... Now THAT one was totally fake-looking, as if she was trying to squeeze some tears out.
