JUMP A Comic Martial Arts Performance

An exciting and breathtaking experience! Watching those actors and actresses put up stylishly choreographed fights and death-defying stunts while managing to infuse so much comedy into the performance was amazing! And it all was tied nicely to a plot! Trust Koreans to come up with such a culturally friendly, non-verbal thatre piece of a gem. I definitely had a blast of a time sitting at the Esplanade theatre and laughing my head off to all the slapstick but nicely executed comedy.

Most surprising part would be at the very begining when even before everyone had arrived and was seated for the show, an 'old man' was seen shuffling through the rows of seats, telling the audience to stand up to allow him to pass through. He even sat on some audiences at some point of time and gestured them to give him a massage or even a scratch on his back. That alone pointed to the laughter that was to come in the actual performance.

Upon entering the theatre we were greeted with a sign that informed the audience that one of the original actors has been replace as he had been injured during a performance last week. And looking at the way they hopped, jumped, somersaulted, kicked, punched, rolled and stretched on stage, it is no wonder. Really admired this group of people who were skilled not only in acrobatics but also martial arts and mime acting. Well, they did speak a little along the way, but they did so in heavily-accented English (to cater to the country they were in) which they proudly showcased and added to the comic effect of the show.

All in all, glad I caught the special on CNA which featured the Jump show, or else I would not have bought the tickets early and spend such a fun-filled Sinday afternoon.

Here's more about the show from the Tour 2 Korea website. For those who can read Korean, do visit the official website, though there is also an 'English' language option.

If I had the chance I may watch it again.

Interesting trivia - The casts' age ranged from 23 to 30, with the most 'senior' characters played convincingly by among the youngest of the team. All of them are trained martial artists, gymnasts, acrobats but some are at the same time graduates in theatre and drama. For the show they were also trained for 3 years in acting and mime.
