un pensamiento para ti...
~ Gabriel Garcia Marquez
love in a time of cholera
I mentioned in an earlier posted that I wanted to watch Love in the Time of Cholera. However, the movie has thus far been gathering mainly negative reviews which has made me much less enthusiastic to catch it in cinemas.
In fact for me, the moment I realized that the film was made in English and not in its native Spanish language, that to me is a huge loss in its credibility. What's worse, the main cast consisted of an American, a Spanish and an Italian, when the story was set in Columbia with Latin Americans. Clearly another case of American filmmakers thinking that all Mediterranean / Latino people are the same, just like how all Asian people are the same.
Spanish filmmakers behind Salvador (Puig Antich) picked German actor Daniel Brühl as the lead actor in this essentially Spanish story, but at least the man is half-Spanish and speaks the language fluently. Englsih filmmakers should take a leaf or two from European filmmakers in this.
Latin people should be making their own version of the movie, with their own talents!
I said in that post that I hadn't managed to finish the book and thought of using the film as a cheap subsititute but after publishing that post, I decided to revisit the book and actually started reading it some weeks ago. It's the translated version, of course.
I'm now half-way through the book, which is considered as good progress for me. At least an MRT ride these days isn't complete until I finish at least a few more pages of the story. I definitely recommend this book, written by Gabriel García Márquez. One of the best, non-pretentious, exciting and poetic love stories I've ever read.
Hopefully I break my cycle and actually complete this book soon.

The reviews I received were generally quite negative too, but they were mostly from people who have read the book before they see the movie. I was wondering if those who have not read it would perceive the movie differently. In any case, I think I will give the threatical release a miss, but probably will pick up the book if I could.
That's true... When reading the book I found it hard to imagine how a filmmaker can go about capturing all these emotions and personalities when most of it's beauty lie in the author's use of words. So I suppose as you said, perhaps people who have read the book are more likely to hate the cinematic version.
I may actually watch the theatrical version much later when the movie is available for rental and after I have finished the book, just to see how the filmmakers interpreted the story.
Hey Pearlyn!
Hee surprised to hear from me?
Anyway just wanna recommend this book that was also adapted into a movie. Its called "The Deep End of the Ocean", by Jacquelyn Mitchard and the movie starred Michelle Pfeiffer. Movie was released in the late 90's. The book is awesome. Makes me wanna watch the movie now.....
