1) Otra tragedia más
Yet another tragedy sweeps across the States with the latest school shooting, this time in Virginia Tech campus. Apparently it was the worst in America's history of school shootings, leaving 32 dead, a far cry from only 12 who died in the shootings in University of Texas in 1966, and even the recent Columbine High school massacre which killed 15 people including its killers in 1999 could not compare to that. The shootings in Killeen, Taxes where 23 people died was the record holder of the highest fatalities until Virginia came along.
See previous US college shootings here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18137414/, and also the Columbine High massacre.
Dear President Bush said that the whole of America will grief, yada yada... And yet, he also adds that he still believes that Americans have the right to bear arms, and probably will in no way ban civilian's access to firearms.
Is America really that proud of those numbers??? 32 students killed! Wow! There you go, America is yet again the forerunner, in killing innocent soldiers AND students!!
The killers are inhumane, but one wonders how the idea of even picking up a gun to kill anyone in sight just because they suffered injustices. Movies and video games? Of course. But who gave them the will to even come into possession of the guns so that they can live their sick fantasies in reality?
Another tragedy. More innocent lives. And unlike natural disasters, this could have been prevented. Counselling, early detection, and BAN ON GUNS would have been highly effective ways to prevent 32 lives from being lost, and thousands of others scarred physically and emotionally from the experience.
I don't think I even want to watch news clips that document the tragedy. It pains me. And to think that people are still not waking up their senses even after seeing so many instances of how people are killed blindly everywhere in their country, including in schools which Bush himself correctly says (!!!) that is meant to be a sanctuary away from harm. This make me even more depressed.
2) ¿Mi amante?
I don't like watching awards ceremonies cos they tend to be quite draggy, so I'd usually rather catch the results on papers the next day. However, I happened to switch to the 2007 HK Fim Awards the time they were giving out the award for the Best Actor and so stayed on to watch. Lau Ching Wan won, and I was indeed glad cos this is a long overdue recognition. Watching Amy Kwok on screen crying tears of joy for her husband was also one heart-warming moment. You could really feel that happiness in Lau's winning the coveted award.
Lau's win is not too surprising though, cos looking at the nominations, Lau Ching Wan deserves every inch of his award - Aaron's acting can never be compared with the other nominees, Jet is more of a Kung-fu actor than an actor actor, and Tony has won so many awards for excellent performances in excellent movies that he should not win this time for his nomination in the comparatively inferior Confessions of Pain. As for Chow Yun-Fatt... Hmmm... I guess he's just been away from the Chinese movie scene so... his nomination has not much impact on me... But of course, that's just me.
But the more shocking moment came immediately after this award when the presenters for the Best Movie award were, gasp, Tony Leung and Carina Lau!!! Best thing was, while they held hands and walked towards the podium, it just felt very awakard between them. A very distant feeling, zero eye contact, saying their lines like they memorized it, standing together like statues. All in all - fake. I mean, after all those pictures of Carina Lau holding hands with her new boyfriend, a new diamond ring, and just only barely a month after the news of their breakup, there they are being arraged as presenters for an award together. What were the organizers thinking? Better still, what were Tony and Carina thinking? Was it a publicity ploy? By the way, no matter what she says or he says, I do believe that she has indeed moved on with someone else. Poor Tony, but it takes two hands to clap, I guess. Anyway, what do I know?
See the results here, and more pictures here.
3) Telenovela de Coreano
There I go again, hooked onto another Korean drama, this time a drama called Alone In Love which I caught on Starhub cable and have started getting drawn into it. A very heartwarming but different Korean drama which chronicles the lives of a couple after their divorce. The split was unfortunately linked to a tragedy in their lives which they never had the courage nor strength to come to terms with. Nevertheless, after the divorce, we see the couple constantly meeting up, poking their noses into each other's life, matchmaking for each other and irritating the daylights out of each other. Yet of course, like all good Korean dramas, the couple do in fact still love each other and yearn for each other, but for the sake of pride and a knot in their hearts which they found hard to untie. It's a sad story in its essence, but nonetheless peppered with good witty dialogue and humour.
Do see here for the review of Alone In Love. And someone posted the first few episodes of the serial onto Youtube so just click here to see the videos:
Definitely a recommended watch.
